After much deliberation, the votes from over 13,000 children from 530 schools and groups have been compiled to select the winner for the Young People's Book Prize 2020. Find out which of the shortlisted books has been crowned the winner, and meet the authors in our family-friendly virtual award ceremony, hosted by Blue Peter’s Lindsey Russell.

Challenges for vaccine passports

A new report published by the SET-C (Science in Emergencies Tasking: COVID-19) group identifies 12 criteria that should be satisfied in order to deliver an effective vaccine passport. These include understanding how long a passport might be valid, as well as technical, legal, and ethical considerations.

Catch up with our latest You and the planet event in which our panel discuss the options and opportunities to improve air quality and take urgent action, without which we will continue to see increasing global temperatures, extreme weather, damage to biodiversity and loss of human life.

The event was hosted in partnership with Manchester Science Festival and also streamed as a part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival.

The Royal Society YouTube channel is a chance to catch up on our latest videos and events, including the recently added exploration of what the world would look like without vaccines, made in collaboration with BBC Ideas. The Royal Society BBC Ideas partnership also features short explanations on the wonder of soil, how the world defeated smallpox and the science of why we can’t resist doughnuts.

Disability in STEM

Two new reports published by the Society provide key insights into the experience of students and staff with disabilities in STEM. Detailed analysis of Higher Education Statistics Authority (HESA) data shows changes in the proportion of students and staff with disabilities over time, while qualitative research investigates barriers to staff declaring disabilities in the workplace. Both reports make recommendations for further research and practical action that could be taken across the sector to address the inequalities highlighted.

Take a virtual tour of a new digital exhibition featuring portraits of Fellows of the Royal Society by Anne-Katrin Purkiss. Celebrating over 30 leading scientists through Purkiss’s unique photographic portraits, which show them in the context of their working environment. Following a previous display held at the Royal Society in 2010, this exhibit presents Fellows photographed over the last decade.
