Having moved our Summer Science Exhibition online this year for the first time in its long history, we also had another first in offering an online quiz. Hosted by comedian and science communicator Dr Steve Cross, the quiz featured special guests including physicist and television presenter Professor Brian Cox, author and television presenter Konnie Huq and chemist and YouTuber Professor Martyn Poliakoff. With rounds on movies, space, the elements and more, there are questions for everyone. Watch our catch up now.

Call to the Government to prioritise opening schools
A recent report by the Data Evaluation and Learning for Viral Epidemics (DELVE) group calls for the Government to prioritise a general return to school in September and to keep schools open after that.
The report, Balancing the risks of pupils returning to schools, highlights the potential impact on the 13 year groups of students who have been affected by the lockdown. It considers the longer-term economic consequences, the effect on children’s mental and physical health and safety, and identifies key action points for the Government.
Programme to boost maths skills for the careers of 2040
A new two-year programme, Mathematical Futures, aims to shape the future of mathematics education by identifying the arithmetical, data and digital skills that will be in high demand by employers in the next 20 years, as well as the skills and training needed by teachers in the classrooms of the future.
Overseen by the Royal Society Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), in association with the Royal Statistical Society, the London Mathematical Society, and the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, the programme will have input from sectors including higher education, government and employers in business and industry.

Delve into the history of the Summer Science Exhibition to discover some of the quirky and unusual displays of the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Royal Society’s Librarian, Keith Moore.
Twenty-five prestigious Royal Society medals and awards have just been announced, celebrating exceptional researchers and outstanding contributions to science across a wide array of fields. Amongst them, the new Royal Society David Attenborough Award and Lecture 2020 was awarded to anthropologist and television presenter, Professor Alice Roberts, for her contributions to public engagement.
