Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Don't Increase Genetic Mutations

Novel approach compared induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to subcloned cells

A new study suggests that iPSCs do not develop more mutations than cells that are duplicated by subcloning. Subcloning is a technique where single cells are cultured individually and then grown into a cell line. The technique is similar to the iPSC except the subcloned cells are not treated with the reprogramming factors that were thought to cause mutations.

The Contradictory Catalyst

The key to speeding up the rate of reaction of a catalyst for energy storage lies in making the reactive parts move more slowly

One reason we can't bottle summer sunshine and save the solar energy for rainy days is that we don't have an efficient way to store it. Nature stores energy in chemical bonds, like when plants photosynthesize our food.

Quinoa Genome Accelerates Solutions for Food Security

There is immense potential for the genome sequence to help scientists understand quinoa and therefore modify it for more widespread, commercial use

Quinoa could hold the key to feeding the world's growing population because it can thrive in harsh environments and grows well on poor quality, marginal lands. Researchers have now completed the first high-quality sequence of the Chenopodium quinoa genome, and they have begun pinpointing genes that could be manipulated to change the way the plant matures and produces food.
